The village of

Lébény

Left, the place on main street where a statue commemorating WWI casualties usually stands, but it's currently away being restored; Right, down a block or two from the templom, we neared the corner where the ice cream shop is, and here is the sign showing the way to go to Wien (Vienna) or to the nearby city of Gyor.

Left, the sign on the fence of the ice cream shop in Lébény; Right, Józsi waiting to order our ice cream.

Left, Józsi eating his ice cream cone and a small part of the back shady garden of the ice cream shop; Right, Across from the ice cream shop is a house with a saint's statue on the corner. This is Szent János, and the statue itself dates from 1789 and the house was added behind centuries later. I think he is the patron saint of travelers, as this spot was the edge of Lébény in 1789.

Left, Jimmy's Pizza at the end of the main street in Lébény. We eat here sometimes, the food is good; Right, this is the vicarage for Szent Jakob's templom. (where the priest lives)

Left, one of the decorations outside the vicarage; Right, another decoration outside the vicarage. These are made of metal and both are fairly good sized.

Left, one of several of the pubs (in this case, it was also a restaurant) that have closed in Lébény in the last year or two due to both the recession and changes in the laws regarding pubs; Right, the mayor's office.

Left, the building of the volunteer fire department of Lébény is housed; Right, on the side of their building is this shrine of Szent Florian, the patron saint of chimney sweeps; soapmakers, and firefighters. His feast day is May 4.

Left, an abandoned building on main street in Lébény. This is on the register of historic places

Left, the newer cemetery in Lébény; Right, we wondered why it smelled so bad and then turned around... across the street from the cemetery gates is the backyard of a house, which was a pig lot! Life in a rural village!

Left, the older cemetery in Lébény; Right, the "little school" although we are not sure exactly which grades this includes. (somewhere between the 2-5 "kindergarten" and the pre high school level)

Left, the school for older kids For high school, kids have to choose a school in one of the nearby cities of either Gyor or Mosonmagyaróvár; Center, a Roman milestone in front of the school. It used to be placed near a nearby fortification called QUADRATA at the edge of the road connection between Ad Flexum and Arrabona (now known as Mosonmagyaróvár and Gyor, respectively). Right, a new playground built near the schools using EU grant money.

Left, an original old coach gate, Center, another old coach gate but with a replacement gate and hinges; Right, an old house similar to ours but with and old gate attached to the house.

Left, another old gate that has kept its shape but with a new gate; Right, the community center at the edge of Lébény. This is a busy place with activities for various ages.

Left, another new playground built with an EU grant, at the edge of the village; Right, the view looking across the street the other way... farm fields and the old cemetery in the distance.

As we passed the Szent Jakob's templom again Jer saw it through a gap in the trees at the street and thought it looked very pretty frames by leaves.
